Once you've chosen your style, you'll need to know your hat size to achieve a secure, comfortable fit. As a rule of thumb, your Stetson should be reasonably snug so that a light wind won't blow it off your head, but not be so tight as to cause discomfort or distraction. Here are two techniques to get the perfect fit.
Option 1: The Measuring Tape Method
Start with a measuring tape (or a piece of string you can measure later), and wrap it around your head, placing it where your hat will sit - typically, at the middle of your forehead and about 1/8" above your ear. Hold the tape firmly, but not uncomfortably tight. Find your size using the chart below. If your measurement falls between sizes, order a size up; you can always add a bit of padding in the sweatband to achieve the perfect fit.

Option 2: The Snapback Trick
A slightly less accurate, but convenient alternative is to grab a snapback hat, and map your most comfortable fit to the chart. As with the above technique, if your measurement falls between sizes, order a size up. You can always add a bit of padding in the sweatband to achieve the perfect fit.

| Hat Size | Inches | Metric | |
| XS | 6 3/8" | 20 1/4" | 51 cm |
| 6 1/2" | 20 5/8" | 52 cm | |
| 6 5/8" | 21" | 53 cm | |
| S | 6 3/4" | 21 1/2" | 54 cm |
| 6 7/8" | 21 7/8" | 55 cm | |
| M | 7" | 22 1/4" | 56 cm |
| 7 1/8" | 22 5/8" | 57 cm | |
| L | 7 1/4" | 23" | 58 cm |
| 7 3/8" | 23 3/8" | 59 cm | |
| XL | 7 1/2" | 23 3/4" | 60 cm |
| 7 5/8" | 24" | 61 cm | |
| 2XL | 7 3/4" | 24 1/2" | 62 cm |
| 7 7/8" | 25" | 63 cm | |
| 3XL | 8" | 25 1/2" | 64 cm |
All Stetson hats fit true to size, unless otherwise noted.
Taking an accurate measurement should help you find a hat that fits comfortably.

Many of our fur felt and straw hats have a number followed by an X, such as 4X, 6X and up to 1000X.
There is no industry-wide standard for how the “X” factor is calculated. At Stetson, the specific criteria behind our “X” designations are proprietary and have been refined over generations. Each hat company determines its own scale, so when you see “X” ratings from other brands, understand that these ratings are not comparable to Stetson’s.
In felt, it is determined by the percentage of furs used in making the hat body. We use beaver, mink, chinchilla and other animal fur to make bodies. The mixture of which furs we use determines the X's.
In straw, the X's are also determined by the body used to make the hat. The tighter the weave, and the narrower the straw reed used to make the hat, the better X quality is marked in the hat.
The size of a fur felt hat cannot be increased.
A hat retailer may be able to stretch it slightly, but over time, it will return to its original size. A fur felt hat can be taken down up to one full size by a proper hatter.
A hat that’s one size too large can be sized down with the addition of foam or cork hat sizers.
Thin foam weatherstrip tape, or paper towel also works well to achieve a more secure fit.
We like to say that quality takes time.
Due to the handcrafted nature of our hats, demand can occasionally overwhelm our supply.
When you visit the product page of the style you like, and your size is not available, you can sign up to receive a 'Back in Stock' notification.
When your size is back in stock, you will receive an alert by email.
Our legendary hats are crafted to last.
With proper care, they’ll do just that. Our felting process yields hats of impeccable durability that are designed to resist the elements and hold their shape.
Each hat also develops an attractive patina over time that will reflect the life of its wearer.
Here are a few pro tips that will help you keep your Stetson in the best shape longer.
Your hat will last a lifetime while following these important instructions.
To clean your hat, remove dust and loose dirt with a soft brush. Start at the left side of the hat and brushing counter-clockwise.
We suggest using the proper brush for felt hats.
A light-colored brush for light-colored hats and a dark-colored brush for a dark-colored hat.
You can also use a mild soap solution such as Woolite and water and a very soft brush or try baby wipes. The hat needs to dry at room temperature.
Should a light-colored hat become spotted with water or grease, use talcum powder or cornstarch to soak up excess and avoid using any kind of liquid cleanser.
For more substantial stains, we recommend only using the services of a reputable, professional hat cleaner.
Remember: your Stetson belongs to you, and it showcases your unique style and the experiences you've had. The natural effects of regular use can contribute a great deal of personality to your beloved hats. Therefore, unless it significantly detracts from your personal taste, you should embrace the opportunity to proudly wear a hat that bears the marks of wear.
The liner inside of your hat is not meant to be sewn in, so that it can be removed, replaced or cleaned.
Store your felt hat upside down on its crown, on a clean surface or in a hat box to keep the brim from flattening out. We now offer a travel hat case along with a premium hat case.
Avoid exposing your hat to the heat from car windows, radiators, lamps, stoves, and enclosed cars in summer.
The combination of the heat and perspiration will shrink the sweatband.
To keep perspiration from penetrating the fur felt, occasionally turn down the leather sweatband so it can dry out.
If your hat gets wet, shake off the excess water, and turn down the self-conforming leather sweatband which will keep the brim from touching the surface you laid your hat on.
This will allow the hat to dry naturally.
While the hat is wet, don’t place it near heat, like a radiator or lamp. Excessive heat exposure while the hat is wet can reactivate the felting process and result in shrinkage, creating an uneven surface in the shape of your hat.
To properly put on your hat, lightly hold the brim in the front and back between your index finger and thumb.
While it is common (and fully acceptable) to remove your hat by the crown in public as a sign of respect, you’ll want to handle the crown as little as possible. Doing so will increase the lifespan of the hat.
When placing it on your head, position the sweatband at the front of your forehead, pull it back, and lift it slightly above your eyebrows. This helps keep your hair in place when needing to remove your hat.
We craft our signature Open Road in a few variations.
You can learn more about all of them in our Guide to the Open Road.
The two most popular styles, our 6X and Royal Deluxe share the iconic Open Road silhouette, but are crafted with different fur felts and finishes that give them their unique characteristics.
The more rugged Open Road 6X has a substantial feel, a stiff finish and offers a more secure fit.
The somewhat dressier Open Road Royal Deluxe has a soft, supple feel, a flexible finish and more forgiving fit.
Because of the flexible finish, the Royal Deluxe has a brim that can be snapped up or down—which is perhaps its key distinction.
3 quarts, actually.
The phrase is believed to have come from the Spanish word galón, a braided leather hat band and early cowboy hats had crowns large enough to stack ten galóns on.
Yes, most of our fur felt and straw hats are proudly handmade in the U.S.A. and are marked as such.
Our legendary hats are woven into the fabric of American culture, spotted in the Wild West and the White House - and of course, in countless films and TV shows.
Our cowboy hats, fedoras, Open Roads and more have starred in more Westerns, film noirs, screwball comedies and adventure pictures than we could ever catalog.
But we’re always happy to help identify a style. Visit the Contact Us page for more details.
Stetson has been around since 1865; therefore it is very difficult to provide information such as value, age, or style name for vintage items.
There have been many books written about the Stetson hat over the years.
We recently launched a book "Stetson: American icon", bringing together 160 years of history of our beloved brand.
We also recommend Stetson Hats and the John B. Stetson Company by Jeffrey B. Snyder, as well as two books by Debbie Henderson: Hat Talk and Cowboys & Hatters: Bond Street, Sagebrush, & The Silver Screen.
Our hat registration process focuses on 100X quality fur felt hats.
When you purchase a hat of this quality, a certificate of registration is included in the box where your hat is encased.
Therefore, you do not need to register your hat and we encourage you to keep your certificate of registration.
Stetson was founded in Philadelphia, PA in 1865, by John B. Stetson.
The son of a New Jersey hatter, he used his knowledge of the family trade while trapped in a Rocky Mountain rainstorm in 1863 to craft his first prototype for himself, which he soon sold to an admiring stranger for a five-dollar gold piece. He moved back east, and two years later founded his namesake company, selling hats that would soon become internationally recognized for their quality and craftsmanship.
You can learn more about his life on Stetson Stories here, as well as explore 160 years of Stetson history, craftsmanship, and culture in our in-depth company timeline and our first-ever coffee table book, Stetson American Icon.
Our founder, John B. Stetson is credited with creating what we know as the modern day cowboy hat.
In the late 1860s, he introduced the Boss of the Plains. It was his first-ever original design, with a tall open crown and a wide brim that fended off the elements. The “cowboy hat” as it became known, soon became the inextricable symbol of the American West.
Today, we craft the finest Western hats in honor of his legacy.
